Let’s Gist On menstruation

Did you know?
In Ghana, 95% of girls sometimes miss school due to menstruation? Menstruation is a major barrier to
girls’ attendance at school due to a lack of facilities, traditional beliefs that menstruating women are unclean, discomfort and pain, as well as the risk of being teased.

What You should Know.

We need to know that periods are just a normal phenomenon and a healthy part of every girl’s life and it’s one of the reasons why we are obviously alive today; reproduction.

What HFFG is doing to support young girls.

The Hope for Future Generations, HFFG as part of its 20th anniversary, is donating 3 million quality, sanitary pads to girls in deprived communities, as well as the disabled to enable them enjoy their periods and also menstruate in dignity. This project embarked by the HFFG is to help eliminate period poverty which is a global issue affecting women and girls who don’t have access to safe, hygienic sanitary products, and/or who are unable to manage their periods with dignity, sometimes due to community stigma and sanction.

Imagine your sister or a friend having to miss school because she can’t afford to purchase a sanitary towel, and as a result, she has to resort to using all

manner of things like newspapers, rags and even plantain leaves to save herself from being soiled or embarrassed. Imagine the infections she would be introducing to her “coochie.”

HFFG on the 28th of July, 2020, launched the Pads for girls everywhere campaign by donating 1,000 sanitary pads to the people of Pediatorkope and Kajanya community all in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra region.  These are hard to reach communities as they are cut off from the main community by the Volta river.  The Padiatorkope island has to be reached by an approximate  of 15 minutes boat ride. The excitement and glimmers of hope on the faces of the girls and the community members were very heartwarming to a volunteer like me.

What you can also do.

Good-willed  people, corporate entities and philanthropists can still donate to this awesome course by contacting HFFG on their social media handle on twitter @HFFG2001, Instagram @hffgghana and on +233557927058.

Young Health Advocates Ghana donate to the Pads For Girls Everywhere campaign.

The Pads For Girls Everywhere campaign is an initiative coined by the Hope For Future Generations, a non-governmental civil society organization in Ghana that seeks to improve the quality of life of women and children. According to UNICEF, around 26% of the female population globally are of reproductive age. This is one of the reasons why Hope For Future Generations is mobilizing 3 million pads for over 500,000 girls everywhere.

This campaign has been set up to commemorate their 20th anniversary in 2021. Hope For Future Generations chose this precise initiative due to the challenges girls face in the area of menstrual hygiene. Many young girls who go to school are unable to practice menstrual hygiene since they have limited accessibility to menstrual hygienic resources and products. According to World Bank, promoting menstrual hygiene management is not only a sanitation matter; it is also an important step towards protecting the dignity, bodily integrity and overall life opportunities of women and girls.

The Young Health Advocates Ghana (YHAG) , a youth-led empowering and capacity building group has joined this campaign by donating an amount to support the initiative. It is of utmost importance for all hands to be on deck to support young girls especially in these critical times. The YHAG group urges everyone to participate in this donation and ultimately change the lives of girls everywhere.
